🦋 Wildlife: What to Expect in a Natural Setting

Hilltop Retreat is surrounded by natural beauty, and with that comes occasional encounters with the environment that makes this space so special. While we maintain the property to a high standard, some elements of nature are part of the experience, not a reflection of cleanliness or maintenance, but of the setting itself.

As a rural property located near the lake, you may notice insects (like flies, ladybugs, ants, spiders) near heighten places, windows or light sources, particularly in the evenings.

The most common are western conifer seed bugs (a type of leaf-footed bug).

You'll tell by:

  • The long body and brown coloration

  • The zigzag/light band across the wings

  • The “leaf-like” widening on the back legs

  • Stagnant movement

What it means for you:

  • It’s not dangerous—no disease risk

  • Not dangerous to people or pets

  • They can technically bite, but it’s rare and usually only if you handle them with bare hands

  • If it happens, it’s mild. Think quick pinch, not medically significant

  • It will give off a smell if crushed (similar to stink bugs)

  • They often wander indoors looking for warmth, especially around windows

What to do:

  • Avoid squashing it (for the smell, though mild and brief)

  • Use a fly swatter (located in the laundry room) to move it outside

  • Check window seals as this is how they usually get in

If you’re seeing a lot of them, that’s more about entry points than infestation. One or two is normal; dozens means there are gaps somewhere.

🐱 The Neighbourhood Watcher

You may spot a brown cat occasionally passing through the property, often at night. It may stop and sit simply to observe, it's not a cue. This cat is not ours and does not interact with guests, it simply travels through the area as part of its routine. Think of it as a quiet passerby (or security) rather than a pet or resident.

We kindly ask guests to:

  • Not feed or approach the cat

  • Allow it to continue on its path undisturbed

  • Do not harm or take the cat

(disclaimer: this is not the actual cat, merely a random cat that highly resembles.)

🦝 Wildlife & Our Waste Management

Like many rural properties, raccoons were once a common visitor.

However, we’ve implemented effective waste management measures, and as a result, sightings have become very rare, even when waste is temporarily stored during longer stays.

Our systems are designed to:

  • Deterring wildlife on the property

  • Prevent wildlife from accessing garbage

  • Maintain cleanliness and safety around the property

  • Ensure guests are not disturbed

✔️ Our Commitment

We take every measure to ensure your stay is:

  • Clean

  • Comfortable

  • Well-maintained

If you ever need assistance during your stay, we’re always available to help.

FAQs

Can you guarantee there will be no bugs?

No rural or lakefront property can guarantee zero insects.

What we can guarantee is that:

  • The home is professionally cleaned and maintained

  • There is no infestation or indoor pest activity

  • Any occasional insects are environmental and harmless

Will mosquitoes be a problem?

In most cases, no.

Activity can vary depending on:

  • Time of day (more active at dusk/evening)

  • Weather conditions

  • Seasonal changes

Many guests experience little to no disruption, especially during the day.

Help! There's a bug, make it go away!

1. Let them out (easiest)

  • Open a nearby window or door

  • They’re naturally drawn to light and will often find their way out

2. Use a tissue or cup

  • Gently pick it up with a tissue or trap it with a cup

  • Release it outside

3. Use the provided tools

For convenience, we’ve provided:

  • A fly swatter (laundry room)

  • A handheld vacuum (where available)

Why are they just sitting there?

They’re attracted to something and are usually trying to get back outside.

western conifer seed bugs are slow-moving and usually stagnant, which is why they often appear still.

Is this an infestation?

An infestation would look completely different (clusters, breeding, activity in hidden areas) “I saw more than one, is that a problem?”

Not necessarily. If doors/windows have been open or lights are on at night, or its a warmer area than outside, you may see a few. This is still considered normal environmental exposure, not an indoor issue.

Are bears a concern?

Bears are not commonly encountered at the property. While they exist in parts of Ontario, they are not a typical presence in this area, and we have not had sightings, much less issues, involving them.

What if I see "something"?

Remain calm.

  • Do not approach

  • Do not try to scare or intimidate

  • Simply allow it to pass

Most animals avoid human interaction and will move on quickly.

Is it safe to be outside at night?

Yes. Guests can enjoy the outdoor space comfortably. As with any natural setting, basic awareness (e.g., not leaving food out) is recommended, but there are no known safety concerns related to wildlife on the property.

Hilltop Retreat offers a private, natural setting. With that comes the occasional reminder that you’re surrounded by nature, not a sealed urban environment. We prefer to set clear expectations so your experience is smooth, predictable, and enjoyable.
