Updated: Feb 5
As of January 2026, we've upgraded to these carbon monoxide (CO) + combustible gas detector, with extra environment readings. For your safety, Hilltop Retreat is equipped with these throughout the home. These devices continuously monitor air quality and provide both visual and audible alerts if unsafe levels are detected.
What You Should Know
A reading of 0 PPM CO is normal and safe
If the alarm sounds or the screen displays elevated CO or gas warnings:
Open windows immediately (if safe to do so)
Exit the property
Contact us right away
Call emergency services if you feel unwell
Carbon monoxide is odorless and invisible, so alarms should always be taken seriously.
⚠️ Do not disable, unplug, or tamper with detectors. Doing so may result in additional charges or removal from the property. Your comfort and safety are our top priorities. If you have any questions or concerns during your stay, please reach out immediately.
Why It Replaced The Old One
Old detectors:
Just beeped
No display
No real-time info
Often CO-only
This newer style:
Shows actual numbers
Detects multiple hazards
Has visual + audible alerts
Battery backup if power goes out
Much easier to diagnose issues (no mystery beeping)
Readings: Normal vs Dangerous
What readings are normal vs dangerous
Carbon Monoxide (CO) – measured in PPM
Carbon monoxide is invisible and odorless. Any reading above 0 matters.
CO Reading | What it means | Action |
0 PPM | ✅ Normal / Safe | No action needed |
1–9 PPM | ⚠️ Low-level presence | Monitor; ensure ventilation |
10–30 PPM | ⚠️ Elevated | Open windows, stop gas use |
30–69 PPM | 🚨 Dangerous | Leave the area; call host |
70+ PPM | 🚨🚨 Severe danger | Evacuate immediately; call 911 |
Key note: Symptoms can include headache, dizziness, nausea, confusion.
Example: A Standard Reading
What the screen is showing (a detector located in the south wing)

CO 000 PPM → Carbon monoxide level (0 = safe)
GAS (flame icon) → Monitors natural gas / propane leaks
71°F → Room temperature
35% → Relative humidity
Battery + lightning icon → Plug-in unit with battery backup
Speaker icon → Alarm/sound indicator
Test button → Manual alarm test
Because it’s located above a water room, you can expect:
🌡️ Higher temperature readings
Warm air rises
Pool rooms are usually kept warmer to prevent condensation
It’s normal to see temps 2–6°F warmer than other areas of the house
➡️ This is not a safety issue
Gas (Natural Gas / Propane)
This detector looks for combustible gas, not a numeric PPM.
Status | What it means | Action |
No alarm / normal icon | ✅ Safe | No action |
Gas icon flashing / alarm sounding | 🚨 Leak detected | Leave immediately |
If a gas alarm sounds:
Do NOT light matches or use electronics
Leave the property immediately
Call the host and/or emergency services
Temperature
Temperature Readings
The temperature displayed on safety monitors is for reference only. Comfort ranges may vary by season, and temperature alone does not indicate a safety issue.
🔒 Safety-wise
Temperature does not affect carbon monoxide or gas alarm thresholds. The detectors trigger based on gas concentration, not heat.
So:
CO danger levels = the same in summer and winter
Gas leak response = identical year-round
🌡️ Comfort-wise (what guests expect)
Season | Typical Comfortable Indoor Range |
Winter | ~65°F–72°F (18°C–22°C) |
Summer | ~68°F–76°F (20°C–24°C) |
In summer, higher indoor temperatures are not unsafe by themselves, they’re just less comfortable.
Important summer-specific notes
Higher temperatures can make gas smells more noticeable (because air expands), but this does not change alarm thresholds
Guests may open windows more in summer, which actually improves ventilation
Temperature readings on the detector are informational only, not a safety alarm
Humidity
30–50% = Ideal
Below 30% = Dry air
Above 60% = Can encourage mold (not an emergency)
Humidity is informational only, not a safety alarm.
💧 Higher humidity readings
Pool, hot tub, water features = higher ambient moisture
Normal readings here can be:
40–60% routinely
Brief spikes above 60% after heavy pool use
➡️ Also not a safety issue ➡️ Humidity is informational only on this device
The detector is not alarming for humidity or temperature, only CO or gas.
Temporary Chirps vs Real Alarms
A single intermittent chirp indicates a maintenance or battery alert. A continuous alarm indicates a safety issue and should be taken seriously. To avoid panic over the wrong sound:
Single chirp every 30–60 seconds → low battery or device status
Continuous loud alarm → real safety event (CO or gas)
Aerosols Can Cause False Gas Alerts
Strong aerosols or cleaning products used near detectors may temporarily trigger alerts. If this occurs, ventilate the area and contact us via email.
This is very common near bathrooms and pool areas.
Triggers include:
Hairspray
Cleaning sprays
Perfume
Steam + chemicals
TLDR; Safety Detector Notes
Safety detectors monitor carbon monoxide and combustible gas only
Temperature and humidity readings are informational
Do not unplug, move, cover, or tamper with detectors
A single intermittent chirp indicates maintenance or battery status
A continuous alarm indicates a potential safety issue
Aerosols, cleaning products, or heavy steam near detectors may cause temporary alerts
Ensure children do not press buttons or interfere with safety equipment
If an alarm sounds:
Ventilate or exit the area immediately
Ensure all guests are safe
Contact us right away
Call emergency services if anyone feels unwell
🌞 Summer HVAC & Comfort Notes
During warmer months, Hilltop Retreat’s HVAC system works continuously to maintain a comfortable indoor environment across a large, multi-level home.
Please note:
Temperature may vary by room and floor, especially in areas above the pool or water rooms where warm air naturally rises.
Pool and water-adjacent areas may feel warmer or more humid, which is normal and expected.
Opening windows and exterior doors for extended periods can reduce cooling efficiency and may cause temperature fluctuations.
For best comfort, we recommend keeping windows and doors closed while the air conditioning is running.
Our HVAC system is designed for comfort and safety, not rapid temperature changes. If you have concerns during your stay, please contact us and we’ll be happy to assist.
